Ramsay was named after one of the earliest real estate developers in Calgary, William Thomson Ramsay. The earliest developments in the neighbourhood happened in the 1880s. Ramsay was established as a neighbourhood in 1914.
It is located east of Elbow River, which is a popular river among canoers and rafters. There are also pathways surrounding the river, which is great for walking and biking. The area is also near Stampede Grounds, the venue for Calgary's popular annual rodeo known as the Calgary Stampede.
The neighbourhood is served by a number of schools like the St. Anne Academic Centre and Ramsay Elementary. There is also Janus Academy, which is a private school for young students with autism.
