Southwood was established as a neighbourhood in 1960. It is bisected by Elbow Drive while also bordered by major road networks. To the north of Southwood is 98th Avenue while Anderson Road is to the south. Macleod Trail borders it to the east while 14th Street SW borders it to the west.
The neighbourhood is also accessible by public transportation as it is served by Southland and Anderson stations of the CTrain. Southwood is served by the following schools: Ethel M. Johnson Elementary, Foundations for the Future Elementary, St. Stephen Elementary and Junior High, and Harold Panabaker Junior High.
There are also a number of commercial developments in Southwood including Southland Park, Calgary's largest suburban office park. There is also mini mall in the area called Southwood Corner. The neighbourhood also has various restaurants and cafes.
