Sunalta is located in the inner city of Calgary. It is just south of Bow River, which is popular for its pathways that walkers, joggers and bikers use often.
The neighbourhood was established in 1910, three years after it was annexed to Calgary. The land was also previously owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway, which has 20,100 kilometres of track all over Canada. Sunalta also has its own train station, the Sunalta LRT Station.
The neighbourhood is also served by Sunalta Elementary and Sacred Heart Elementary. Both schools are publicly funded.
The pride of the neighbourhood is the Sunalta Community Association, which operates the local centre that has since been named one of 17 best community centres in Calgary. The centre was noted for its versatile venue and affordable prices.
