Altadore was established in 1945. The name was believed to be a portmanteau of "alta," which means high, and "dore," from the French word "d'or" that means "of gold." It's unclear where the gold came from but the neighbourhood is located on a hill.
The neighbourhood is a happening place with a lot of entertaining events and cultural celebrations. The Marda Loop Business Revitalization Zone is right within the community. It also has amazing parks and is in close proximity to River Park, which is not just a great place for people to explore and walk around, it's also a haven for dog lovers.
In 2010, Altadore was named one of Calgary's best neighbourhoods. There are a number of schools within the neighbourhood including Altadore Elementary and Dr. Oakley School, which is for students from grades three to nine who have learning disabilities. Both are operated by the Calgary Board of Education.
