Turner Valley used to be a booming and natural gas town. However, the gas plant ceased to operate in 1985 but the town continues to celebrate it as part of Turner Valley’s history. The town was incorporated in 1977, over 47 years after it was acknowledged as a village.
Turner Valley is one of the gateways to Kananaskis Country, a recreation area that offers various activities like bird watching, camping, cross-country skiing, fishing, hiking, and horseback riding.
Within the community, one can enjoy golfing at the semi-private Turner Valley Golf and Country Club or swimming at the Dr. Lander Memorial Pool. The latter actually offers more than just a pool as it also has facilities for skating and skateboarding. For the adventurous group, there is a Friendship Trail in Turner Valley that leads to the neighbouring town of Black Diamond.
