Killarney/Glengarry is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Calgary. It was established in 1906 and annexed to Calgary in 1910. It was named after Glengarry County in Ontario because the first settlers of the neighbourhood came from there.
The neighbourhood may have been established early but growth was slow. Only a few houses were built pre-World War II. After the war, there was a housing boom in the area. By 2002, most post-war houses were replaced with modern ones.
Shopping enthusiasts will enjoy this neighbourhood because of the many shoppings areas. There are a number of shops and restaurants along 17th Avenue, 26th Avenue, and 37th Street SW. Just north of Killarney/Glengarry is Westbrook Mall, which has a Walmart and a Canada Safeway.
