Okotoks is a bedroom community in Calgary just along Sheep River, which is part of the Bow River watershed. It is also the largest town in Alberta. The town got its name from a big rock located seven kilometres west of it. “Ohkotok” is the Blackfoot First Nation word for rock.
This town was incorporated in 1904, five years after it was established as a village. There are a lot of buildings in the town preserved in the name of heritage conservation. It also has its own airport for charter flights and for a helicopter flying school--the Calgary/Okotoks Airranch Airport.
