Upper Mount Royal is one half of the Mount Royal area. Upper Mount Royal is separated to Lower Mount Royal by an escarpment. The whole Mount Royal area was established in 1904. Many consider it one of the best and most prestigious places to live in Calgary.
Upper Mount Royal is home to houses and structures that are over 100 years old. It has an area redevelopment plan in place to make sure that older structures are protected even when the neighbourhood is welcoming new developments.
There are at least four schools that serve the entire Mount Royal area: Earl Grey Elementary School, William Reid Elementary School, Mount Royal Junior High, and Western Canada High School. Upper Mount Royal is also bordered by major roads: 17 Avenue to the north, Premier Way to the south, Royal Avenue to the east, and 14 Street to the west.
